The Dundee Hills Embraces Sustainability with Revino’s Reusable Bottles

In an industry-leading move towards environmental sustainability, four Dundee Hills wineries are among the first to use reusable glass wine bottles. This year, Revino, an Oregon-based startup introduced its innovative bottles to the state’s wine industry, intending to reduce the carbon footprint associated with wine packaging and shipping.

Revino’s bottles are truly a first-of-their-kind in the United States, setting a new industry standard for sustainability. These bottles feature a distinctive leaf imprint, the word “REFILLABLE,” and an outline of Oregon embossed on the bottom. They become carbon neutral after just the third reuse, making them a game-changer in the effort to reduce waste and carbon emissions. In the US, where 16.2 billion glass bottles and containers are consumed annually and less than 30% are recycled, Revino’s initiative is a crucial step forward.

Revino’s system operates in a continuous cycle: from the initial bottle manufacturing and distribution to redemption, sanitization, and reuse. That means consumers can return their empty bottles to any of Revino’s 40 (and counting) return locations for the company to wash, inspect, and then back into inventory to be used again and again.

Among the earliest adopters of Revino who have or will bottle in 2024, are several Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association members, including Lange Estate Winery, Winter’s Hill Estate, Cramoisi Vineyard, and Winderlea Vineyard & Winery, with interest and commitments from numerous other Dundee Hills wineries for future bottlings.

The Dundee Hills is home to more B-Corp-certified wineries than any other region in the world. The region’s winemakers and vineyard managers actively protect and cultivate the integrity of the soil, maintain watershed health, and ensure natural habitats are kept intact. Alternative packaging options including lightweight bottles have been popular in the region for many years, and Revino’s reusable bottles take the carbon savings even further with the potential for 50 reuses.

By adopting Revino’s reusable bottles, Dundee Hills wineries are once again demonstrating their dedication to sustainable winemaking practices and preserving the environment for future generations – all while producing exceptional wines.

CRAMOISI VINEYARD

“Cramoisi is committed to sustainability; we’re organic and Biodynamic farmers and our practices are almost 100% by hand – bringing the right insect ecosystems to our land, fewer tractor passes, and treating the people with respect from the vineyard to our consumers. By adding Revino glass to our business we will reduce about 85% of emissions compared to single-use bottles.” – Sofia Torres-McKay, Owner at Cramoisi Vineyard

  • Cramoisi’s 2023 Cuvée of Pinot Noir, 2023 Sofia’s Block Pinot Noir, and 2023 Cramoisi The Gem Pinot Noir will all bottled with Revino and released between 2025-26. In total, they will fill 5,460 reusable bottles.

LANGE ESTATE WINERY

“We are thrilled to partner with Revino since we first had the opportunity to meet with founders Keenan and Adam almost four years ago. Their enthusiasm, research, and execution for this ambitious program has immense potential and dovetails seamlessly with our company sustainability goals.” – Jesse Lange, Winemaker at Lange Estate Winery

  • The 2023 “Evangeline” Pinot Noir will be in Revino bottles and available in Spring 2025.

WINDERLEA VINEYARD & WINERY

We’re excited to partner with Revino as we have been on the hunt to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing the weight of the glass we use for our wine. Revino provides us with a great opportunity to reduce the weight of our wine bottles by over 100 grams and allow us to reuse the glass bottles as well. It’s a great ‘twofer’.” – Donna Morris, Owner of Winderlea Vineyard & Winery

  • Winderlea will bottle the 2023 Winderlea Imprint Pinot Noir (available Fall 2025) and the 2023 Winderlea Pinot Blanc (available Spring 2025) in Revino bottles.

WINTER’S HILL ESTATE

“We are proud to be one of the first wineries in Oregon to use the Revino bottle. This is a powerful way to reduce our carbon footprint while also engaging with our customers and fans so we can work together to build a healthy and sustainable future. Some of the activities we do, such as composting all of our winery waste, are important, but it is hard for a wine lover to get involved.  With the Revino bottle, it’s easy to understand how we can all make choices that can be part of the solution to the climate crisis.” – Russell Gladhart, Owner of Winter’s Hill Estate

  • Winter’s Hill bottled almost all of its wines in Revino bottles this year and will release them beginning in early 2025 with the Pearly Everlasting white blend.
